Degrassi: Next Class
1 2 3 4

The 1st season of Degrassi: Next Class began airing on F2N on the Family Channel in Canada on January 4, 2016, and became available to stream on Netflix in most other territories worldwide on January 15, 2016. It began airing on ABC3 in Australia on May 16, 2016.

Production and casting for this season had begun in the winter of 2015. TeenNick and MTV (Canada) would soon after announce on June 4, 2015, that they would no longer be airing Degrassi. Producers and DHX Media had already been in talks for other means to distribute the series. A few weeks later, it was announced the series would be added to a new teen block called F2N on Family Channel while it would also join Netflix and be distributed in most countries worldwide. Filming for the started on June 15, 2015 and wrapped early September 2016. Five actors were added to the main cast for its upcoming run: Amir Bageria, Jamie Bloch, Soma Bhatia, Chelsea Clark, and Dante Scott.

While technically it is another season within the current incarnation of Degrassi, it is being viewed by many as a "rebranding" or "reboot" of the series, much like "The Next Generation" was from "Degrassi High." It is also worth noting that Netflix and F2N categorizes this as a new series, and divides the 20 filmed episodes into "season one" and "season two" of Degrassi: Next Class.

Character Descriptions[]

Dino

Dino is an entrepreneurial millionaire trapped in the body of a 10th grade nerd. Dino is a wunderkind who's always on the lookout for new business ventures. He's calculating and methodical, and hypothesizes all outcomes before throwing himself into situations. Because of this, he often lets logic get in the way of emotional connections and is only able to find and reconnect with his heart through his friends.

Esme Song

Esme Song is prim and proper. A button-down keener on the outside, an erratic thrill-seeker on the inside, Esme's an 11th grade student who lives in the moment. She's confident, knows what she wants, and isn’t afraid to manipulate others in order to get it. These antics are rooted in her desperate need for attention, so when things don't go according to her plan, Esme lashes out in manic, psychopathic ways.

Goldi Nahar

Goldi Nahar is an activist and feminist who, while putting her hijab on every morning, considers ways in which she can improve Degrassi Community School. Goldi is high achieving and out to win the egrassi Student Council. She’s passionate yet somewhat reserved, leading others to believe that she’s standoffish, when in reality she’s just being respectful of others and her own beliefs.

Maude

Maude is strong and dominant. She is an 11th grade short haired lesbian, who always takes the lead. Whether it’s directing the school play or fighting against world hunger, she wants her voice to be heard. Maude’s a go-getter, and sometimes abuses her leadership powers by going further than she can get. It’s only when she’s able to listen and follow others that she truly achieves her goals.

Vijay Maraj

Vijay Maraj is a wide-eyed, tall Indian who is good-looking without knowing it, Vijay is a hopeless romantic with a flare for the dramatic. He believes in happy endings, and spends his time fantasizing about the one perfect boy who will sweep his grade 9 gamer geek self off his feet. He’s an idealist who’s honest, emotional, and who always follows his heart– even though it usually leads him towards heartbreak.
