Alex Nuñez and Ellie Nash became acquainted with each other through their then boyfriends, Jay Hogart and Sean Cameron, before the fourth season of Degrassi: The Next Generation. They connected over the fact that they both came from troubled family backgrounds. In spite of Alex's rebellious and often cold nature, she had a soft spot for Ellie, and became something of a voice of reason for her, particularly in regard to Ellie's estranged relationship with her alcoholic mother Caroline Nash.

Season 4[]
By their first day of Grade 11 in Ghost in the Machine (1), Ellie and Alex had seemingly become friends as they were hanging out in front of Degrassi when Paige greeted the former. Ellie complimented her outfit and Paige replied, "New year, new look, new Paige!" Their relationship had substantially improved from the previous year, likely due to the fact that Paige had helped Ellie to realize that she had a problem and needed to stop cutting. However, Alex said, "Ellie, just because Princess Prissy talks to you doesn't mean you have to answer." An annoyed Paige then left, and Ellie sighed.
In King of Pain, Ellie supported her best friend Marco Del Rossi's campaign to become Student Council President over Alex, but was nevertheless happy when Marco chose her as his vice president.
In Queen of Hearts, Ellie is left to live alone once Sean leaves and her pet ferret Bueller Nash-Cameron dies. When she found it hard to pay her rent, she sought out a way to earn some cash. With the help of Marco, Ellie learned to play a new card game, which she practiced and eventually became very skilled at. After winning $10 from a game with Alex, Craig Manning and Jimmy Brooks, Ellie thought about playing Dylan Michalchuk's hockey team with Alex for more cash. After Alex suggested playing for more money, Ellie invites Alex to move in. Alex tells her that she should go be with Sean in Wasaga if she's lonely. That or move back home. Ellie tells her that her mom is an alcoholic, but Alex points out she's sober now. As they are playing, Alex bets high. Ellie nervously tells her that that's her rent money but when Alex surprises Ellie with a game winning hand, Alex says she should believe in people more and leaves, driving home their conversation about Ellie's mom. Afterward, Ellie realizes that what she was doing wasn't the best way to earn her rent money, and Alex then tells her what she needs to know about her mother.
In Moonlight Desires, Ellie and Alex both work on the blood drive and are upset when Marco isn't allowed to donate. Ellie later defends Alex when Craig calls her out for saying promiscuity is a guy thing. Ellie calls Craig out for what he did to Ashley.
Season 5[]

In Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Marco, Paige, Ellie and Alex are seen studying at The Dot. When Marco makes a remark about Dylan, Ellie comments that he's still bitter about last year, which makes Alex laugh. When Dylan shows up and Marco claims Tim is his boyfriend and tells Tim that Dylan was just leaving, Ellie and Alex smile at each other. The next day, after taking their exam together, Ellie, Alex, Marco, and Paige sit at lunch discussing their exams. Ellie sits next to Alex and talks about how she's sure she failed. Paige tells them they need to have some fun, and Ellie looks at Alex raise her hand in agreement before raising her own. Paige says it's a gay club, so they won't have to worry about getting hit on. When Alex remarks that that's great, Ellie smiles, repeating her "Great." Later, at the line outside the gay club, Alex, Paige, Ellie, Marco, Hazel Aden and Tim are excited about entering the club and getting a break from their studies. Inside the club, Alex, Paige, Ellie, and Hazel dance together.

In High Fidelity (2), Ellie and Alex graduate as part of the Class of 2006 with Paige, Hazel and Marco. The two smiled at each other during Marco's speech. They hugged at the graduation ceremony.
Season 6[]
In Rock This Town, both Alex and Ellie attend Liberty's birthday party, but Alex arrives with Jay while Ellie arrives with Marco and Spinner.
In The Bitterest Pill, Alex and Ellie are seen at J.T. Yorke's memorial service.
Season 7[]
By Standing In The Dark (2), Alex has moved in with Ellie, Paige, and Marco. In their kitchen, Marco complains that Dylan hasn't called. Ellie says he's checked out and when Marco leaves, upset, she yells out to him that she's sure he'll call. Alex laughs at Ellie's feeble attempt at comforting Marco, and Ellie looks at Alex as she laughs.
In Love is a Battlefield, Alex moves out.
