In The Way We Get By (1), Zane invites Riley to see Thomas's art showing, though Riley is less than enthusiastic at the mention of Zane's ex-boyfriend. Riley doesn't want to go because he is not interested at art, which upsets Zane, as he comments, "I just thought we could do something I like." Riley shows up the art gathering, and Zane introduces Thomas to Riley. Thomas asks about how much they've been through, and Zane tells Riley about how Thomas is a big supporter of the local art community. The three critique the art in the showing, and when Riley insults a piece of Thomas's, Thomas becomes offended and walks away. Zane goes after Thomas to console him. Riley later apologizes to Zane, and Zane comments that Thomas will get over it. Zane reveals he had to talk Thomas out of the bathroom for a hour.
