The relationship between Spinner Mason and Jane Vaughn is known as Spane (Spinner/Jane). It began in the seventh season of Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Relationship History[]

Overview[]

Spinner first took an interest in Jane after catching sight of her in the cafeteria in the episode Death or Glory (1). After Spinner prevents a fight between Johnny DiMarco and Toby Isaacs, Jane notices him as well. Ms. Hatzilakos later forces the two to attend a peace meeting to avoid detention. After crushing on each other, they finally became a couple in Pass the Dutchie. The two maintained a stable relationship until Lost in Love (1), when Jane found out that Spinner had lied about getting into police college. However, they quickly rekindled their relationship in the next episode of the two-parter, Lost In Love (2). They broke up for the second and final time in Degrassi Takes Manhattan, after Spinner overheard Jane talking to Holly J. about her affair with Declan one year prior. Ultimately, they ended things on good terms, with Spinner forgiving her and giving her a goodbye kiss before moving on and marrying Emma.

Season 7[]

Spinner and Jane have a brief encounter in Standing in the Dark (1), when Spinner, running to meet Jimmy, Manny, Emma, and Darcy, almost collides with Jane, who is entering the school. She looks up, surprised, but Spinner does not seem to notice her.

Death-or-glory-pt-1-1

In Death Or Glory (1), Spinner develops a crush on Jane, who came from Lakehurst and notices that his (soon to be) arch rival, Johnny DiMarco and his gang are bullying Toby and Spinner asks them to stop and tells Johnny to cut it out. Johnny agrees, but as he tries to sucker punch him, Spinner manages to catch the punch on time. This impresses Jane, along with everyone else. Spinner is later told by Principal Hatzilakos about zero tolerance in violence is against school policy and she gives him a peace committee flyer. As Spinner is about to leave, Hatzilakos sees Jane walking down the hallway after the late bell and asks her why she is late and why she shouldn't give her detention. Spinner defends her by saying she was going to the peace committee as well. She is confused at first, but Spinner replies, "Beats detention." She agrees and is given a flyer. They pause and smile at each other before going to class. They go to the peace committee meaning. They find it boring, with Jane whispering to Spinner that he must really hate her for dragging her into this. He replies that maybe he just wanted an excuse to hang out with her. She returns that he could've come up with something better than the meeting. They are then shushed by Liberty. Derek rushes in and tells Liberty that her brother, Danny, is in a fight and they all rush out. Jane watches as Spinner breaks up the fight that ensues between Liberty and Lucas Valieri. Spinner then feels a sharp pain in his groin and doubles over before Jimmy Brooks tells them that Mrs. H is coming. At The Dot, Spinner asks Jimmy if he thought Jane was impressed. Jimmy says she won't be impressed when he's in the ICU, adding that something is really wrong with Spinner and he needs to get it checked out. After going to the doctor, Spinner and Jane are later seen playing pool. Spinner and Jane start flirting with each other, but when Jane playfully punches Spinner, he suddenly feels an intense pain and leaves Jane by herself. After that, Spinner is seen painting a banner and spots Jane. Jane sees Spinner, but after a moment she walks away because she's still hurting from being ditched earlier. Jimmy comments "Ouch. Cold" and says he was going to ask how their night went but he guesses he just found out. Spinner tells him that Jane's not his type. Jimmy repeats him and says that she's him but with breasts. Spinner says he knows and protests by asking who would want to be with a guy whose "stuff" is malfunctioning. Jimmy looks down and Spinner realizes what he just said and apologizes. He's interrupted by a phone call from his doctor he refuses to answer. Later, while defending Toby from Johnny once more, Jane watches disapprovingly as Spinner knocks him out cold.

In Death Or Glory (2), Jane watches Spinner as he plays dodgeball and beats Jimmy. She goes to confront him about what's going on and why he's fighting Johnny but when he says it's just "dude issues," she says that Johnny had it coming. He won't budge on telling her though, so she walks away, upset. Later, Spinner goes to Jane's locker and says he comes in peace. She tells him she saw his latest "performance" online and doesn't think it was cool. He asks what about her saying that Johnny had it coming and she says that his actions crossed a line. She reveals that everyone, including herself, is scared of him, and that he's on his own. As she begins to turn away, he grabs her arm to spin her around and tells her that he was recently diagnosed with testicular cancer and that they are "ripping it out" after school. She doesn't know what to say and he says not to bother. Spinner also admits that he's been fighting to prove his masculinity. She says he doesn't have to prove his manhood by fighting some guy. He says she's a girl and doesn't get it and repeats what she said about him being alone in this and walks away. Jane later confronts Jimmy and asks if he knows about Spinner's "condition" and his plan to fight Bruce the Moose. Jimmy seems reluctant to do anything but Jane says he will miss his appointment if he fights him, adding that he needs a friend or he could die. After fighting Bruce and getting through his operation, Spinner meets up with Jane after getting detentions for the fight. He says he's done fighting except for one thing. She feigns obliviousness and he says he means cancer. She smiles and admits she just wanted to hear her say it. She remarks that he's back from his operation so soon and he says that most of him is. He mentions having chemo coming up and she jokes and flirts with him. He laughs and tells her to not make him tender, pouting his lip. She tells him she always knew he was with a smile as she turns away. He smiles to himself as he watches her walk off.

The next day, Jane tells Spinner that she saw the podcast of the band's failure at the band competition and tells him that at least he studied. Jane says Spinner has to work so she's going solo at the dance. Spinner and Jane have been dating for a while and are ready to spend their future together. Jane is getting ready for pre-law school and Spinner is applying for police academy. Everything is going quite peachy until Spinner gets rejected from the police academy and he can't bear to tell Jane when she sees a police cap in his hand and she thinks he got in after he tells her he closed The Dot for the night so they can go to the dance together. As he is about to correct her and tell her the truth, The Shep interrupts them and tells her she's been chosen for the National Youth Leadership Symposium where she will give a speech about being a girl in football. He reminds her to thank him. Jane has to get to class but she asks Spinner to dinner to celebrate their news. His plans to tell her the truth later come to a halt because she plans a celebration party and invites Jimmy and Trina to dinner and he can't bear to let them down either. Holly J. blabs to Jane about Spinner's secret in the middle of dinner that Sav, Peter, and Danny are at along with Jimmy and Trina. She asks if Spinner didn't really get in in front of everyone. He says not immediately and she asks how he could be so stupid. He laughs and says it may be because he is stupid: too stupid for police college and too stupid for her. She says he isn't stupid but lying to her was. She walks out of the dinner angrily. After Spinner and Jay get drunk later that night, he climbs into Jane's bedroom which she is practicing her speech and surprises her. She is still upset about what happened and says he's not the guy she thought he was and needs time to think about it, and after her mom finds Spinner he leaves. Later in the episode, he comes up with a plan to propose to Jane after Jimmy tells him he's proposing to Trina. He enlists Holly J.'s help to get into the symposium.

In Lost In Love (2), Spinner orders flowers for Jane and they are delivered by Anya. Sav comments "at least someone has a sweetheart" when he sees the bouquet of flowers that Spinner got her, but then adds on, "had a sweetheart," when he sees Jane throw the flowers away. Danny sees this and asks if there's a lover's quarrel. She grunts and he says he hopes she's more articulate for the speech. Jane responds that she's been writing all night about being a girl but all she could think about was a guy. Danny says Spinner lied about police college and Jane agrees, adding that he showed up at her house, drunk, and woke up her mom. She says she loves Spinner and trails off. Danny asks if sometimes love just isn't enough. Jane is unsure. The Shep interrupts them and reminds Jane to thank him and leaves. Jane gives him a fake smile and asks Danny what to do. He says Spinner can wait, but her speech can't. Desperate to win Jane back, Spinner sneaks into the Leadership Convention with Holly J. by taking the name tag of a man named Barry Cohen. He sits next to Danny and watches her give her speech. When she is about to thank someone who pushed her to succeed, Danny nudges Spinner. When Jane thanks The Shep, Danny says she must have short term memory. Jane walks to their table after her speech and asks what Spinner is doing there. He says he know he messed up but he learned his lesson. He promises to never lie to her again just as the announcer says that "Barry Cohen" must now make a speech. Spinner takes the stage as Barry Cohen and improvises pretty well. Danny asks Jane if anyone would've thought Spinner could handle himself in a place like this. Jane shakes her head. Spinner then uses this opportunity to remind Jane she always wanted a plan for the future and proposes to Jane. The announcer starts cheering Jane and Barry. Soon everyone, including Danny, joins in. Jane gets up and leaves. Spinner follows her and Jane asks why he would do that when the day was supposed to be very special for her. Spinner gets upset and says her stupid boyfriend screwed it up again. She clarifies she meant it's important for women to succeed on their own and he sweeps in and says "let's get hitched." She asks if he listened to her speech. He says yes and that she didn't thank him. She asks if she should have thanked him for ruining her big day. Spinner breaks up with her by saying if she needs time to think, she can take all the time she wants because he's done. She says it's probably for the best. Later the next day, Danny says Jane needs her head checked. She says she didn't get hit that hard and Danny asks how she explains the memory loss, alluding to the fact that she forgot to thank Spinner in her speech. Jane says he lied to her and proposed in front of a hundred people. Danny says he gets if she doesn't want to marry him but to "give the dude his due." She nods at Danny, agreeing with what he said. At the dance, Jane tells Danny she can't find Spinner. Holly J. overhears and says she won't get a chance to hurt him. Jane asks if she knows where he is and she says yes but she has to beg. Jane and Danny look incredulously at her. Holly J. repeats for her to get down on her knees and beg. Jane does it and Holly J. smiles and gets on her phone. Holly J. ends up getting Spinner to the dance with the help of Jay, who tells him Manny is at the dance and he needs to win her back. It's all a ploy so that Jane can make a speech at the dance, apologizing to Spinner and thanking him for being there for her. She says she loves him and doesn't know what she'd do without him. People in the crowd "aww" and Spinner smiles. After he takes her back, Jane says yes to Spinner's proposal, but also states that they must wait until after college. The two get back together.
